Thousands of additional homes are set to be unlocked in the Mid-Western Region thanks to a $2.5 million partnership between the state and local governments.
Nationals Member for Dubbo Dugald Saunders has announced $1.4 million from the NSW Government’s Regional Housing Fund to help Mid-Western Regional Council (MWRC) deliver housing now and into the future.
“We know there’s a desperate need for housing right across regional NSW, including right here in Mudgee and surrounds,” Mr Saunders said.
“This funding will enable council to do the necessary planning work to implement the recommendations of the Regional Housing Taskforce locally and fast-track the delivery of new affordable housing in the region as well.
“Half of the funding will be given upfront, while the remainder will be delivered when council’s strategic planning initiative milestones have been met. I have every confidence in MWRC and I commend them on the work they’ve already done in this space.”
Mid-Western Mayor Des Kennedy said the council will contribute $1.1 million towards the two-part project.
In the short term, the funding will enable council to design and construct infrastructure to supply 22 new lots at its Saleyards Lane affordable housing development. In the long term, the project will deliver water modelling and urban release strategies to accommodate a further potential 2,000 lots zoned for future housing but not yet developed.
“Our region is growing with more and more people recognising it is a fantastic place to work and live,” Councillor Kennedy said.
“Council is committed to managing this growth by supporting the provision of diverse and affordable housing options.
“I would like to thank the NSW Government for their contribution towards accommodating the future growth of our region.”
Strategic planning milestones must be met by 31 December 2022 to qualify for the second phase of funding, with nominated infrastructure projects to be completed by 31 December 2023.
