The NSW Government has announced $3 million in funding to boost COVID-19 response efforts for small rural and border councils to support their communities.
NSW Partnerships: Local Councils Program – Stage 2 will provide grants of $90,000 each for 33 bush and border councils.
The grants, targeted at small rural councils and those adjoining state and territory borders, recognise the additional challenges they have faced during the pandemic such as resource constraints, isolation, border closures, and other cross-border impacts.
Nationals Member for Monaro John Barilaro has welcomed $180,000 in funding for councils in the Monaro to boost COVID response efforts for vulnerable members of the local community.
“Our region has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic and this funding boost will help provide support for vulnerable residents to ensure they get the help they need,” Mr Barilaro said.
“Both Snowy Monaro and Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Councils have had a huge task supporting their local communities through the challenges of the past two years and this funding will make it a little easier for each council.
“This program will provide a much-needed boost for council-led initiatives that support vulnerable members of the community to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.”
Each council will receive a $90,000 grant as part of the program which is targeted at small rural councils and those adjoining state and territory borders.
Nationals Minister for Mental Health, Regional Youth and Women and local MLC Bronnie Taylor said the additional support is very welcome.
“The past two years has been an incredibly challenging time for our community, with the impacts of the bushfires, floods and COVID-19 felt across the Monaro,” Mrs Taylor said.
“As we recover, it is important that we invest in initiatives that support our most vulnerable and this funding will ensure our local councils can provide the assistance our region needs.”
The program will provide funding to the following councils:
