Stephen Bromhead MP

Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Housing

Member for Myall Lakes

Stephen Bromhead

Stephen is a strong local advocate and rugby fanatic who has served as the Member for Myall Lakes since 2011.

Prior to politics Stephen had a diverse career, beginning as a nurse before turning to law and order and working as a NSW police officer for 12 years. After returning to study, Stephen worked as a solicitor and barrister and ultimately began his own Forster-based firm, Bromhead Legal.

As a former member of the Greater Taree City Council and as Chairman of the Tourism Board and President of the Forster Chamber of Commerce, Stephen’s desire to help the community is paramount. His time in hospitals, local courts and government has given him a first grasp on the real issues the Myall Lakes faces and a deep understanding of his community.

Stephen founded the annual Prostate Cancer Awareness Family Fun Day and the Manning/Great Lakes Traffic Offenders Program which educates drivers referred from court to change their behaviour behind the wheel. Since the program’s inception there has been a significant decrease in repeat offenders within the local area.

As well as representing his constituents in State Parliament, Stephen served as a member of the Legal Affairs Committee and Chair of the Legislation Review Committee during his first term. He was the Nationals Whip from 2015 until the 2019 State Election when he was appointed Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Transport.

Despite Stephen’s busy career, club rugby still plays a prominent part of his life. Prior to politics he started the Forster-Tuncurry Rugby Club after years as the President of the Old Bar Club, Vice-President of the Manning River Rugby Club and President of the Mid-North Coast Rugby Union. On top of this, Stephen was a founding member of the Harrington Rugby club and Wallambah Rugby Club.

Stephen previously owned a property outside Taree and bred beef cattle. He now lives in Forster with his partner Sue. Together they have seven adult children all pursuing their own careers.

On August 17, 2022, Stephen announced he will not contest the 2023 General Election and will be leaving politics in March 2023.
