Transport for NSW is hiring a record number of new apprentices and trainees across regional NSW, giving local economies a much-needed boost.
NSW Nationals Minister for Regional Roads Paul Toole said work to build and service vital road and transport infrastructure across regional NSW had never been more important.
“Creating and supporting jobs in the regions is one of the NSW Nationals in the state government’s top priorities as communities recover from drought, bushfires and the impacts of COVID-19,” Mr Toole said.
“Our $57.5 billion transport infrastructure program continues to power ahead and this year we are offering a record 75 placements as part of the Transport for NSW Apprentice and Trainee Program.
“This program provides great employment opportunities for job seekers or people who are looking to change careers, while at the same time developing skills and knowledge within regional communities to support future infrastructure needs.”
Mr Toole said the program was committed to developing a diverse workforce with women accounting for 40 per cent and Aboriginal people accounting for 30 per cent of apprentices and trainees.
“This program is about giving people the chance to work in the public service as well as improving Aboriginal and female representation across the transport sector,” Mr Toole said.
Member for Dubbo Dugald Saunders said the Apprentice and Trainee Program was critical in building a skills legacy to meet future needs within the local community.
“As we continue to invest in road and infrastructure projects it’s important that we have people on the ground that have the skills for regional maintenance and operational delivery,” Mr Saunders said.
“I’ve seen first-hand how this program has changed lives and opened up employment opportunities for the people of Dubbo.”
The Apprentice and Trainee Program offers placements across nine disciplines including: civil construction, business administration, bridge carpentry, heavy diesel mechanics, metal fabrication, line marking, electrics, painting and blasting, and safety and environment.
All graduates receive a nationally recognised qualification at the end of the program.
