Local cyclists are being urged not to miss out on a new bus trial that will see Queanbeyan become one of the first locations in regional NSW to have bike racks fitted to buses.
Nationals Member for Monaro John Barilaro said the trial would kick off on Monday, December 6, on buses travelling between Queanbeyan and Canberra and run until March 2022.
“This trial is all about helping to boost connectivity across Queanbeyan and into Canberra,” Mr Barilaro said.
“Transport for NSW are partnering with service providers to make it easier for cyclists to travel across the region on their daily commute.
“With similar services already in operation in Canberra this trial is expected to integrate perfectly into the region’s public transport network.”
Practice racks are set up at the Collet Street bus interchange in Queanbeyan where people can practice fitting their bike before using the real thing.
The bike racks can hold two bicycles at a time, working on a first come, first served basis.
“Across the border, in the ACT, bike racks on buses has been a success as it’s convenient and gives people more options for travel, making trips that much more accessible.” Mr Barilaro said.
“If proven successful, further trials will be rolled out across other regional centres.
“Local riders can turn up and use the service or if they wish to provide feedback they can register their interest to actively participate in this on-road trial and make an impact on the regional transport network.”
The trial program will include QCity route 830 from Queanbeyan to Canberra and Transborder express routes 842 and 843 between Yass and Canberra.
Bikes on Buses in the Bush trial is part of Pitch to the Panel, a Transport for NSW program for staff-led ideas.
