The Nationals have raised concerns over reports the only dedicated regional train service provider will be axed to give a pay rise to Sydney train drivers.
The Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) has given the Minns Labor Government two weeks to come to a wage agreement, after a breakdown in negotiations threatened to shut down the city’s entire rail network.
In an update to its members, the Union claimed; “the Government has agreed to abolish NSW Trains and bring all passenger services within one railway agency.”
NSW Nationals Leader Dugald Saunders said it’s a kick in the guts for country communities.
“Whenever Chris Minns wants to go on a spending spree in the city, he pillages the wallets of our regional residents,” Mr Saunders said.
“Ripping money out of our communities to bend to the Union’s demands is a complete disgrace, and it just shows if you live outside of Sydney, Newcastle or Wollongong, he doesn’t care about you.
“All NSW residents should be treated equally, and the Premier’s plan to disadvantage one area to help another is not right, and it’s not the way to resolve this issue.”
Shadow Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Dave Layzell said NSW TrainLink plays an important role in getting people to and from rural areas.
“The regional rail network operates very differently from what happens in the city, which is why we have a dedicated department with specialised knowledge to look after its services,” Mr Layzell said.
“Although we don’t have the full details of what these changes will mean, it’s clear the Premier has turned his back on the bush and any cuts will to at the detriment of our residents and communities.
“If we look at Labor’s regional transport record, we have already seen disruptions to XPT services, the axing of the regional seniors travel card and the cancellation of major road infrastructure projects. Enough is enough and the Premier needs to stop now.”
