Scott Barrett

Scott initially joined the Legislative Council in February 2022 after being preselected to fill the casual vacancy caused by the resignation of the Hon.Trevor Khan. In September last year he was again preselected – this time filling the vacancy caused by the resignation of the Hon. Bronnie Taylor.

Scott describes himself as “a child of regional NSW.” He said, in his inaugural speech, “I was born, grew up and became who I am in regional communities, where I am now raising a family of my own along with my amazing wife.”

Scott said the bulk of his formative years were spent on a sheep and cattle property just north of Orange. After leaving school in 1996 he spent the next year working on Moola Bulla Station, a 1.6 million-acre cattle property in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. He spent the next four years studying at Hawkesbury Agricultural College.

Scott has done everything from reporting on local events for ABC Radio and developing agricultural policy with Nationals’ ministers to exporting meat and working on vineyards.

He serve on the boards of organisations like the Country Education Foundation and Regional Development Australia, while being involved at a community level in everything from sport to local theatre. Scott spent three-and-a-half years working as the state manager of GIVIT – a charity that provides drought, bushfire, and flood relief right across NSW.

Scott sits on a broad range of Legislative Council committees, including the Select Committee on Access Restrictions to Public Lands and Waterways, the Joint Select Committee on the NSW Reconstruction Authority, the Standing Committee on State Development (Deputy Chair), the Committee on Children and Young People, the Select Committee on PFAS Contamination in Waterways and Drinking Water Supplies, the Standing Committee on Social Issues, and Portfolio Committee No. 8 – Customer Service.

Scott lives near Orange with his wife Maryanne and sons Darcy and Henry.
