Nationals Leader Matt Canavan has visited a mining business directly linked to Mount Pleasant, pledging a future Nationals Government will support the coal industry and its workers.
Senator Canavan had reiterated The Nationals’ pledge to dump net zero and to ensure activities cannot and will not destroy the nation’s prosperity.
“The High Court’s decision to stop the Mount Pleasant coal mine is a worrying sign for the future of the nation,” Senator Canavan said.
“It is madness that local planning authorities must now consider the climate impacts of coal used in other countries before approving a mine in NSW. If Australia cannot export coal, our partners will simply look elsewhere, while thousands of jobs will be lost as a result and our prosperity as a nation suffers another hit.
“The Nationals will not only ensure net zero is dead – we will restore common sense and prosperity for our nation. It is about time that state governments stick to their knitting. We cannot change the temperature of the globe from George Street in Sydney. The NSW government should focus on fixing the hospitals, locking up criminals, and building better roads.”
Blackrock Industries managing director Steven Fordham said his company was given its first opportunity thanks to Mount Pleasant back in 2016.
“Mount Pleasant is a significant client for us, and uncertainty around its future expansion has flow-on implications for our business, our workforce, and the broader supply chain,” Mr Fordham said.
“We have a diversified business and continue to pursue opportunities across the region, but the scale and longevity of Mount Pleasant makes it an important part of our business and workforce planning.”
