Nationals Senator Ross Cadell has called for a greater focus on the value of fisheries and forestry within the food and fibre sector to ensure everyday Australians fully understand the important role of the industry in keeping food on the table.
According to the Rural Research and Development Corporation’s National Schools Food and Fibre Education Strategy, just 53% of Australians agree that farmers, fishers and foresters manage their environmental impacts effectively.
That’s despite Australia having one of the strongest global reputations when it comes to modern sustainable practices and environmental stewardship.
Senator Cadell, the Shadow Minister for Fisheries and Forestry, Water, and Emergency Management, said the report highlights the need for greater education around the value of the fisheries and forestry sector, and its long-term commitment to sustainable practices.
“Across regional Australia hundreds of communities are underpinned by the fisheries and forestry sector providing stable employment and career pathways,” Senator Cadell said.
“Unfortunately, the sector is seen in a misguided light by many and doesn’t receive the recognition it deserves when it comes to value add.
“Without a greater focus and increase in education, the next generation of skippers, deckhands, or timber mill operators may choose a different career.
“Australia can’t afford to lose a generation of skilled workers and risk the sustainability of an industry critical to keeping Australian families fed.
“The lack of proper education around the value of fisheries and forestry is a national disgrace.”
