LINK TO SURVEY

The community survey on the proposed changes to the school intake areas for Jerrabomberra and Queanbeyan is closing today, Friday April 8, at 5pm.

I continue to encourage all members of our community to submit their views. The link can be found here: https://forms.office.com/r/efXnKLzpmk

The proposed new school zoning areas were released by the Department of Education on March 23, 2022.

Although I had not had the opportunity to provide input, on being made aware of the situation, I immediately commenced extensive discussions with the Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell and the Department of Education.

These specifically involved the potential impact of these proposals in relation to our local schools, and the lack of consultation. As a result, comprehensive community consultation was implemented.

I have pushed hard on this matter every day since, including my formal response as a Notice of Motion in Parliament at the end of my first Parliamentary Sitting Week.

I have been assured that all matters raised both previously and during this process, and which include all emails received as well as survey responses, will be given genuine and timely consideration.

I will also hold a public meeting to further engage with the community on the outcomes.

I understand how important it is to keep our community united and for students living in the area to be able to attend their local schools.

I have unequivocally made it clear that there must be more engagement with the community so the concerns of parents are heard. Local families must be properly informed of all options.

I’d also like to provide some facts relating to our new Jerrabomberra High School.

It will have an initial capacity of 500 students across 25 learning spaces and is specifically designed for future growth with the opportunity for expansion as need dictates.

Scott O’Hara was announced as the new principal of the high school earlier this year. He previously served as deputy principal at Hunter Sports High School and says he is passionate about doing things differently in order to meet the needs of children. We are delighted to have him on board.

“Response to Submissions” are being submitted this month and enrolments are looking to commence later this year for Years 7 and 8.

My office and I will keep you all abreast of what’s occurring as promptly as possible and you can be assured that this remains one of my top priorities.
