The first sod has been turned at the site of Temora’s biggest-ever infrastructure project, with the construction of a brand-new hospital ready to commence.
First announced by The Nationals in government in 2021, years of planning and consultation have been completed to ensure the new facility fits the needs of the community now and into the future.
Nationals Member for Cootamundra, Steph Cooke, who has championed the project alongside Temora Shire Council, thanked local advocates, hospital staff, and the broader community for their support.
“We are going to see an incredible new hospital built here,” Ms Cooke said.
“The community has been incredibly patient while we’ve worked hard to ensure that the final design reflects the needs and expectations of this vibrant and growing region.”
“While the existing facility has served the needs of the community for generations, we now get to watch this state-of-the-art building take shape and look forward to everything it hopes to offer.”
Ms Cooke was joined by Temora Mayor Rick Firman, Murrumbidgee Local Health District CEO Jill Ludford, and the Minister for Health and Regional Health, Ryan Park.
During the ceremony, Mr Firman, who also chairs of the Local Health Advisory Council, reflected on the positive impact the hospital redevelopment has had.
“Many of you will recall that special day when we had Steph Cooke announce that we were to receive a new tomorrow…It was one of the most warm and happy occasions that I think I can remember in my time in public life,” Mr Firman said.
“On behalf of the Temora Local Health Advisory Council, Temora Shire Council, our staff and our citizens, we’re just so excited for this moment to finally arrive.”
The project will deliver a modern emergency department, upgraded inpatient areas as well as improved birthing and nursery facilities.
The new operating theatre and procedure room has been designed to support more complex treatments, while expanded allied health and ambulatory spaces aim to enhance rehabilitation and ongoing care.
Community services will also be strengthened through purpose-built areas for mental health, drug and alcohol programs, and a range of other community health initiatives.
Medical imaging will also be significantly upgraded with a larger unit featuring a new CT scanner, ultrasound equipment, and an additional procedure room in the perioperative suite.
The redevelopment is scheduled for completion in 2028.
