Older road users in Singleton and Muswellbrook have the opportunity to participate in a road safety workshop as part of the 2022 NSW Seniors Festival.
Nationals Member for Upper Hunter Dave Layzell said the Older Road Users Workshops have been designed to help anyone aged 60 and over refresh on safety tips when it comes to driving, riding, walking, using mobility scooters or catching public transport.
“Road rules, technology and health can change over time which can affect the ability to drive, navigate on foot or use public transport,” Mr Layzell said.
“These workshops will include presentations from Service NSW about the licensing system and financial assistance available for transport as well as a driving instructor with advice on preparing for the older driver assessment and commonly misunderstood road rules.
“Our aim is to equip participants with up-to-date knowledge and access to resources along with providing practical support for those still driving.”
According to the Centre for Road Safety, 48 per cent of pedestrians killed in 2021 were aged 60 years or over although this age group only accounted for 23 per cent of the population.
Nationals Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Sam Farraway said the workshops were a great opportunity for older people get a refresher on how to keep themselves and others safe while getting out and about.
“We understand that many older members of our community are looking forward to reconnecting, so this will be a great opportunity to come together, learn a thing or two and enjoy a delicious morning tea,” Mr Farraway said.
“All participants will also receive a free driving lesson voucher, which will help reinforce the information they will receive on the day with practical training.”
Singleton resident Robyn Schmierer refreshed her road safety knowledge and practical skills to pass her driving test.
“I recently passed my driving test in a manual after having taken driving lessons with a local instructor. I thoroughly recommend the workshops as an opportunity to brush up on the road rules and refresh your skills,” Ms Schmierer said.
The Older Road Users Workshops will be held at Muswellbrook Workers Club on Wednesday 30 March from 9.30am to 11.30am and at Singleton Diggers Club on Thursday 31 March from 9.30am to 11.30am.
