Dr David Gillespie has a long history on the Mid North Coast and spent over twenty years practising as a local gastroenterologist and medical educator. As part of that medical career, David was involved in both small business and the education of local doctors. Together with his wife Charlotte, David built the Hastings Day surgery from the ground up and learnt first-hand the demands of running a small business in a regional area.
David also spent over a decade as Director of Physician Training at Port Macquarie Base Hospital and was instrumental in providing new local doctors the necessary skills to serve the community and build careers in regional medicine.
He was elected as The Nationals Member for Lyne in 2013, replacing the independent Rob Oakeshott.
In July 2016, David was elevated to the role of Assistant Minister for Rural Health and in 2017 was appointed Assistant Minister for Health, to acknowledge his increasing responsibility in the health portfolio.
Most notably David oversaw the implementation and appointment of Australia’s first Rural Health Commissioner. He also set in motion 26 Regional Training Hubs and three University Departments of Rural Health that will allow high-quality rural placements for medical and health students to help ensure rural communities have access to doctors, nurses, midwives and allied health professionals well into the future.
In December 2017, David took on the role as Assistant Minister for Children and Families.
For David, the most important thing is his family. With Charlotte, he has raised three children at their small cattle property in Sancrox.
David put his hand up to be Lyne’s representative in the Federal Parliament to ensure our future generations have the opportunity to succeed.
