NSW Nationals Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke has announced more than $4.8 million in funding for two important water infrastructure projects in Narrandera Shire.
The funding, part of the NSW Government’s Safe and Secure Water Program, will improve sewerage in Barellan and, in south-west Narrandera, allow a feasibility study of septic system sites to the existing sewer network.
“These two projects are extremely important for residents in Barellan and south-west Narrandera, and I’m delighted to be able to make this funding announcement,” Ms Cooke said. “Barellan has on-site sewerage systems which don’t comply with current standards and are prone to failure. Not only is this unpleasant and inconvenient, it is also a risk to the health of Barellan’s residents and to the environment.”
The $4.8 million funding will enable Narrandera Shire Council to design and build a new sewerage system to service the village, which will address residents’ concerns, ensure public health and be crucial in promoting this beautiful community to prospective new residents and businesses.
Ms Cooke said that $48,000 was being provided to study options for connecting septic systems in south-west Narrandera to the existing sewer network.
“South-west Narrandera is restricted by the existing septic system which relies on separate on-site installations, with their inherent high risk of contamination,” Ms Cooke said.
“This study will look at options for connecting this community to the sewer network, thereby preventing potential infiltration into Narrandera Shire Council’s water source and pave the way for future development and housing.
“The NSW Government’s Safe and Secure Water Program prioritises key water infrastructure projects, from local drought backup systems through to new or upgraded dams, to secure water supplies for our regional communities.”
The Safe and Secure Water Program is a $1 billion regional infrastructure co-funding program established in 2017 under the NSW Government’s Restart NSW Fund.
