A new bus service connecting residents from Kandos, Rylstone and Lue with Mudgee started a two year trial this week.
Bathurst Nationals MP Paul Toole announced the “Connecting Kandos” service was poised to become a game changer for members of the community who have been calling out for better access to the nearby township.
Mr Toole said the funding had been approved through the Transport Access Regional Partnership (TARP) scheme for Kandos High School.
He said “Connecting Kandos” will aim to deliver the following:
- A weekly service from Kandos to Mudgee for the next two years as a trial – the primary purpose of this service is to connect Kandos High School students with Mudgee TAFE to take part in various introductory TAFE courses including automotive and animal studies. Without this transport students may not be able to gain this educational benefit. Currently 10 students are attending and there is an expectation this will grow next year;
- The service may also benefit other community member with access to TAFE as TAFE are exploring opportunities for extra courses surrounding employability skills;
- The service will offer a day connection service to Mudgee for residents of Kandos, Rylstone, and Lue. This will enable access to shopping , social outings , connection to medical and employment services;
- Kandos High school is also working with the youth council to utilise this service during school holidays to connect youth with Mudgee for social activities therefore reducing isolation in these smaller communities.
Mr Toole congratulated Kerry Ford from Kandos High School who had been a driving force behind the initiative.
“The school is elated with this good news and already there has been some great feedback from parents who are thankful for this opportunity for their children,” he said.
The Kandos High School community bus will leave Kandos and Rylstone every Wednesday morning (including school holidays) to go to Mudgee TAFE and Mudgee township.
The bus is available for students of Kandos High School and all community members.
It leaves Kandos High at 8.40am (cost $10 per person, $5 per student), Rylstone Community Hall at 8.50am (cost $10 per person, $5 per student) and Lue Public School at 9.10am ($5 per person).
The bus departs Mudgee TAFE for return journey at 1.30pm and departs Mudgee Township (Coles bus stop) at 1.40pm.
