Mackenna Powell was chosen as the NSW Nationals Candidate for Wagga Wagga at a preselection meeting on Saturday. Born and bred in the region, Mackenna understands the issues facing the community.
“The Nationals really are the Party for the regions and I will fight to make sure we get our fair share,” Ms Powell said.
“I’m very excited to be chosen as a candidate, I think the people of the electorate have made it clear they want Nationals representation and that’s what I’ll do for them. I’m still young and energetic enough to fight for the region and I’m excited to take this opportunity on.”
Mackenna has a long track record of community involvement and working with a long list of organisations including Women in Business Wagga Wagga, Wagga Business Chamber, Women in Construction and has worked on charity appeals including the Wagga flood appeal in 2012.
NSW Nationals Chairman Bede Burke said it was important that the people of Wagga Wagga had a strong voice in Parliament who could deliver for the electorate.
“Mackenna has already demonstrated a commitment to the community and she has a desire to work hard for the people of the entire Wagga Wagga electorate,” Mr Burke said.
“This is the first time we’ve fielded a candidate for Wagga Wagga in decades, but The Nationals put regional needs first and that’s the commitment Mackenna has made today, to put the people of the Wagga Wagga electorate first. We had two fantastic women stand for preselection, and I’m confident Mackenna will become another strong Nationals MP that will work hard for her people.”
Wagga Wagga-based Upper House MP Wes Fang said he would work hard to ensure Ms Powell became the next Member for Wagga Wagga.
“Mackenna is a fantastic local champion who has done a lot of work for the community,” Mr Fang said. “Hopefully after March 23 Mackenna will be the Member for Wagga Wagga and she’ll be able to build on this hard work, fighting for the people of the electorate in Parliament.”
