Young Merriwa resident sashed as 2017 The Land Sydney Royal Showgirl
Michael Johnsen MP, Member for Upper Hunter today congratulated young Merriwa resident, Maisie Morrow, on being sashed as the winner of the 2017 The Land Sydney Royal Showgirl competition.
Mr Johnsen noted that this was the first time Merriwa was ever represented by a Showgirl at the Sydney Royal, and that Maisie had delivered an instant win for the town.
“Maisie is a local agronomist and livestock nutritionist with a degree in Rural Science, as well as being involved with her local Rural Fire Brigade, Merriwa Show Society, Merriwa CWA and the Scone Grasslands Society, just to name a few organisations,” Mr Johnsen said.
“We all know that every bit as much as men, women play an equal and vital role in rural and regional communities, and Maisie’s win is not only thoroughly merited, but rightly reflects the role of women in our community story.”
Mr Johnsen also noted that the runner-up, Emma Gorman, was until a few years ago a Scone resident, having grown up in Upper Hunter.
“As I have said before, it is really important that young women growing up and working in rural and regional NSW not only have good role models, but realise that they can make their mark in our wider NSW and Australian communities” Mr Johnsen said.
“I heartily congratulate both Maisie and Emma on their being role models for young women in the Upper Hunter Electorate and beyond,” Mr Johnsen concluded.
The final of the competition was held on Sunday 9th April 2017 at the Sydney Royal Show.
