Kevin Anderson member for Tamworth has been fighting for a permanent, general purpose dog squad in his region for a long while now and it seems Tamworth has it's wish, with the arrival of police dog ‘Johno’ at his new home in the electorate.
Up until now dog units were brought up from Sydney or Coffs Harbour during investigations. This was a very difficult exercise, especially considering the huge demands placed on dogs in that profession. Even before mentioning the absurd travel distances to the outer reaches of Oxley, Barwon and New England police commands. However it seems those days are over, and locals seem very happy with this extension to the regional law enforcement sector.
In February earlier this year dogs were needed to stop juvenile offenders carrying out a crime spree in Armidale. The success of the dog squad was a strong indicator of their effectiveness in the community and therefore a necessity to have closer at hand.
