Travel times to and from the Mid North Coast are set to be slashed with the weekend announcement of a new train fleet to service regional NSW.
Mrs Williams welcomed news a re-elected NSW Liberals & Nationals Government will deliver a brand new fleet of trains to replace the ageing XPT fleet.
“This is fantastic news for our local community and means faster travel times, improved comfort and better reliability on regional train services.
“Over the past four years I have received a number of complaints about the standard of train travel experienced by members of our community,” Mrs Williams said.
“We all know the current XPT trains are getting close to their use-by-date and have dropped below the standards people would expect from long-distance train travel around the world.
“Regional NSW is no longer going to put up with second-rate trains.
“The new trains will be state-of-the-art with modern and comfortable seating, dining, sleeping and entertainment options, including the potential for WIFI. They will also include enhanced security and better access for the elderly and people with a disability.
“The trains will travel at faster speeds so we could see time savings of around 1 hour and 5 minutes from Wauchope to Sydney and 55 minutes from Taree to Sydney.
Mrs Williams said transport in Country NSW was ignored by Labor for 16 years and thanks to the NSW Liberals & Nationals Government, the community is finally seeing the investment it deserves.
“I will be working with the local community to make sure the new trains include all the features the community would expect, including comfortable seats, lots of luggage space and modern on board facilities.
“The government will also investigate putting maintenance facilities for the new trains outside Sydney to support local jobs,” Mrs Williams said.
If re-elected, procurement for the new trains will begin in the next term of government.
