Meet NSW's first Regional Infrastructure Coordinator General

Last week I spoke about the launch of the Regional Growth – Environment and Tourism Fund, encouraging local communities to put in an expression of interest to revitalise existing infrastructure or build new projects in their communities.

Since announcing the opening of the first round of $100 million fund for regional projects we have had a great response from local communities coming forward with exciting new projects that are ready for funding.

This year, while continuing to announce funding for new projects right across the State, we are also committed to cutting more ribbons than ever on finished projects in Regional NSW.

There are currently 312 regional local government and NGO projects receiving funding as part the regional infrastructure fund, Restart NSW, including 139 projects to fix our country roads, 65 dedicated projects (and growing) under our Water Security for the Regions Program and 30 funded projects to boost regional tourism.

These projects represent the start of an unprecedented revitalisation of critical infrastructure across rural and regional NSW. We will be investing another $1.2 billion in projects already earmarked for Regional NSW with future funding guaranteed under the 99-year lease of the State’s poles and wires.

With an infrastructure boom happening across Regional NSW the Government will need reinforcements to ensure that infrastructure projects are being rolled out across the board and all our local communities receive their fair share in efficient time frames.

On that score I am proud to announce that former Australian Army Chief Lieutenant General, Ken Gillespie, has been appointed as the NSW Government’s first Regional Infrastructure Coordinator General, charged with accelerating the roll-out of infrastructure across the State.

This is an exciting time for Regional NSW as Lieutenant General Gillespie’s appointment will ensure that every dollar committed will be spent and each infrastructure project undertaken, however big or small, will be delivered.

Ken Gillespie is an Australian who is an experienced, highly decorated and respected national leader.

He possesses a diverse range of practical experience, including military high command, diplomacy, and private and public sector leadership and will be tasked with overseeing among the most important infrastructure building projects in the State’s history.

The future of NSW is in Regional NSW and Lieutenant General Gillespie will play a major role ensuring we take regional NSW into a prosperous future.
