Matthew Fraser preselected to take on Richmond
Over the weekend the spirit of Nationals’ democracy was in full swing at the preselections for the upcoming Federal Election. Matthew Fraser will attempt a second crack at taking down Labor’s Justine Elliot in a bid to return Richmond to its true colours of green and gold. Meanwhile further south, Dr David Gillespie for Lyne and Luke Hartsuyker for Cowper will both continue championing local issues in their bid to win re-election.
Only narrowly defeated at the 2013 election but winning the primary vote, as well as recording a swing of more than 4% against Elliot, Matthew is well placed to create trouble in the Labor camp up north. And based on his victory speech at Ocean Shores on Saturday, where he spoke passionately and energetically about his community and vowing to fight for Richmond from that point on, they should be worried.
Matthew won the preselection against Tweed Councillor Carolyn Byrne in front of a record crowd of local Nationals members. Among these was our very own previous Leader of the Nationals and Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon Doug Anthony AC, CH and his son and former Member for Richmond the Hon Larry Anthony (pictured above). Matthew’s wife Paula and their 18 month old daughter Mackenzie were also in the crowd supporting their main man (pictured right). Of his candidacy Matthew said:
"Having a real vision for this area, and being prepared to stand up to the ‘big two’ parties is the only way that we are going to get the real money we need for better schools, hospitals and to make this community the ‘Healthy Lifestyles Capital’ of Australia.”
On the Mid-North Coast long-serving incumbents Luke Hartsuyker, Member for Cowper and Member for Lyne David Gillespie were both endorsed in uncontested ballots.
