Paul Toole

Member for Bathurst
Parliamentary Secretary to the Deputy Premier and for Asia-Pacific Trade

Paul Toole started out in local government in 1995, the same year he began teaching at Assumption Primary School in Bathurst. As a councillor for Evans Shire, Paul represented the smaller towns and communities around Bathurst and fought hard to ensure they had a voice in through the council amalgamation process. In 2005 he became the first deputy mayor of Bathurst Regional Council, and in 2007 he was elected Mayor. Under his leadership Bathurst has become the fastest growing inland regional city in NSW.

His fifteen years of service in local government has given Paul the experience and determination to make a real difference for the Bathurst electorate in parliament. As a husband and father of three, and as a teacher, Paul knows the pressures facing local families and will fight to ensure that their interests are always put first.

Throughout his time working for the area, Paul has been a great advocate for better health facilities, education, infrastructure and crime prevention and these are areas that he continues to fight for as the local member.

Paul’s preselection as The Nationals’ candidate for Bathurst continues the Party’s proud tradition of preselecting local champions whose ambition lies solely in good representation for their area.

Paul, his wife Joanne and three children live in Kelso.

Map of Bathurst

The State Electoral District of Bathurst has generally been regarded as Labor territory. Home to favourite son Ben Chifley and host every year to the “Light on the Hill” address, there are few areas with stronger traditional ties to the Labor movement. Like many traditional Labor strongholds in the regions, however, it has drifted inexorably to The Nationals over the past decade.
Bathurst stretches west from the Blue Mountains and includes the LGAs of Lithgow, Bathurst, Oberon and most of Blayney, as well as the towns of Rylstone and Kandos. Major industries are coal mining, agriculture and light industry. Australia’s second largest gold mine is located just inside the electorate at Cadia, between Blayney and Orange.
