Map of Murrumbidgee Electorate

Situated around the city of Griffith, the State Electoral District of Murrumbidgee takes in the shires of Bland, Narrandera, Coolamon, Junee, Leeton and Murrumbidgee . It also incorporates the southern parts of Lachlan Shire and the eastern parts of Carrathool Shire. Situated in the heart of the Murray Darling Basin, Murrumbidgee’s industries are focussed around irrigation, with citrus, wine and rice the major crops. Away from the river the area is a large producer of wheat. Murrumbidgee is one of only two electoral districts in the NSW Legislative Assembly to have been in existence since the first Parliament in 1856. Murrumbidgee was first won by Country Party MP Robert Hankison in 1932 before becoming a stronghold for Labor. After a tough contest in 1984, The Nationals’ Adrian Cruickshank won the seat and thanks to his hard work was able to pass the baton on to Adrian Piccoli in 1999.
