Map of Burrinjuck

Created in 1950, the State Electoral District of Burrinjuck has become strong territory for the conservative side of politics after initially being held by the Labor Party for 38 years. Winning the seat from the Liberal Party in 1999, Nationals MP Katrina Hodgkinson has eroded the once strong Labor vote to 14 per cent at the 2011 state election. Burrinjuck is centred on around the towns of Yass, Gundagai and Young, and also encompasses the LGAs of Grenfell, Cowra and Crookwell in the north and Boorowa, Harden and Cootamundra in the west. It covers some 28,000 square kilometres. Much of Burrinjuck is given to grazing, and the region is known for its fine Merino wool. The country trends more towards cropping in the west of the electorate.
