Thomas George

Member for Lismore
Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly

Thomas George was first elected to Parliament as the Member for Lismore in 1999. As a member of the Nationals since 1969, Thomas George has been a long time supporter and active member of the Party.

Prior to entering Parliament, Thomas George has been heavily involved in his community, beginning in 1982 when he was the Inaugural Chairman of the Casino Beef Week Promotion Committee from 1982-1990.

Thomas’ other community involvement has included his role as President of the Casino Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Representative on the Northern Rivers Area Consultative Committee and Director of the Northern Regional Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter.

Using experiences from his Lismore electorate, Thomas has been a member of The Nationals’ Agricultural and Small Business Committees and the Coalition Advisory Social Development Committee.

Thomas has also been asked to be part of many Joint Parliamentary Committees, including the Victims Compensation Standing Committee, STAYSAFE and Select Committee on Tobacco Smoking.

During his time in Parliament, Thomas has been a spokesperson on Rural Crime and Energy & Ports, was the Deputy Whip in 2002 before becoming Party Whip in 2003 and was also appointed as Temporary Speaker of the Legislative Assembly in May 2007.

Prior to entering Parliament, Thomas commenced his employment with the Rural Bank and was co-founder of a stock & station and real estate agency, and was a successful publican. He has been a Director & Deputy Chairman of the Northern Co-Op Meat Company, President of the Stock & Station Agent Association of NSW, and Vice President of the National Body of the Australian Council of Livestock Agents.

Born in 1949,Thomas is married to Deborah and he has three sons.

The State Electoral District of Lismore includes most of the coastal hinterland north of the Richmond River, stretching west to the headwaters of the Clarence River. It includes the LGAs of Lismore and Kyogle, as well as parts of Tweed, Byron, Richmond Valley and Tenterfield Shires. Agriculture (primarily cattle and sugar), tourism and education (Southern Cross University) are major earners for the electorate. Major towns include Lismore, Murwillumbah, Kyogle, Nimbin, Urbenville and Woodenbong.
