Funding Security for North Coast Men’s Sheds

Federal Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker said Men’s Sheds at Coffs Harbour, Urunga, Nambucca Heads, Bellingen and Dorrigo could benefit from $4.5 million in additional Australian Government funding.

Mr Hartsuyker said the three-year Australian Government commitment secures funding for the national organisation until 2019.

Mr Hartsuyker said all Men’s Sheds in the Cowper electorate could apply for up to $8,000 in funding under Round 11 of the National Shed Development Programme.

“Our regional Men’s Sheds plays a vital role in keeping men active and connected, which contributes to mental health and physical wellbeing,” Mr Hartsuyker said.

“Men’s Sheds reduce social isolation, particularly for older men and people living in rural and remote areas.”

“This round of funding will allow Men’s Sheds to maintain their shed, buy new tools or start new projects.”

The $4.5 million commitment will also assist the Australian Men’s Sheds Association to develop and maintain relationships and links with health providers and employ strategies to more effectively reach and engage men.

Applications for grants are assessed by the Australian Men’s Shed Association, in accordance with guidelines agreed by the Department of Health. All sheds in the Cowper electorate are eligible to apply for funding under the National Shed Development Programme (NSDP). Priority will be given to sheds in disadvantaged or isolated areas.

Men’s Sheds can apply across three funding categories – tools, equipment, community projects and training; building maintenance and development; and health improvement activities. Applications close on September 18.
