Calls for Secord to be sacked
In what is best described as a reckless and insensitive move, Labor’s Shadow Minister for the North Coast called for Liberal MLC Catherine Cusack to “go for a swim at dusk on the North Coast" during a question in Parliament last Thursday relating to the Ausgrid sale. It was a thinly veiled reference to the recent spate of shark attacks in Northern NSW waters.
Our North Coast Nationals MLC Ben Franklin has responded to Walt Secord's remarks, describing it as "deplorable" and an insult to everyone currently affected by the shark sightings and attacks.
Ben has called on the Opposition Leader to remove Secord from the Shadow Ministry, saying he is unfit to represent the North Coast:
"Luke Foley must sack him as Shadow Minister for the North Coast immediately, and replace him with someone who actually cares about our region. Mr Secord obviously has no understanding of the deep pain that shark attacks have caused not just victims and their families but also the entire north coast."
As the Parliament exploded in outrage, Secord apologised for his offensive comments, but that apology was undermined seconds later when he was seen laughing with his colleagues.
"For Mr Secord to suggest that he wants another member of parliament to be attacked by a shark is deplorable," said Ben.
