Backpacker Tax Review Welcomed
Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker today welcomed a review into taxation arrangements for the Working Holiday Maker visa programme.
“I raised this matter with the Prime Minister in the Party Room earlier in the week and I’m very pleased to see the announcement of a review,” Mr Hartsuyker said.
“This review is evidence that the Australian Government has listened to the concerns about the impact of the so called ‘backpacker tax’ on our global competitiveness and many of our agricultural industries, especially horticulture.”
“What we were seeing on the north coast is a drop in the number of backpackers being available for work.”
“This had the potential to be a disaster for horticulture in our region and also a disaster for tourism by virtue in the drop in tourist numbers,” Mr Hartsuyker said.
The review’s scope will cover taxation and superannuation arrangements under the programme and will help to ensure the right measures are in place to support the two key growth sectors of agriculture and tourism.
“This is a welcome opportunity for the agriculture sector, and the horticulture sector in particular, to provide input to the review process.”
“So it’s great to see the matter reviewed and I look forward to a successful resolution,” Mr Hartsuyker said.
