Australian workers shouldn’t pay more tax than foreign workers

Federal Member for Page Kevin Hogan is urging the Senate to reconsider its opposition to lowering the Backpacker Tax to 19 per cent.

“After wide consultation with agricultural groups, all agree the 19 per cent tax rate would work and backpackers would still come to Australia,” he said.

“Lambie’s proposal, which has been backed by Labor, would mean that foreign workers pay less tax than Australian workers doing the same job.

“They are proposing that an Australian blueberry picker at Tabulam or Woolgoolga pay more in tax than a foreign worker.

“The ALP-backed Lambie proposal would also leave a $500 million black hole in the budget and they expect Australian taxpayers to pay an extra $500 million to make up for this shortfall.”
